Premium high-mountain meadow hay, traditionally harvested on our own meadows in the Cerdanya, at 1,500 meters, deep in the Lleida Pyrenees.
No shortcuts
We work our meadows with rotational grazing that lets the meadows regenerate on their own natural course, with no slurry, no herbicides and no chemical fertilizers of any kind. The result is a natural, carefully-made, top-quality hay.

What grows in our meadows
Our meadows are made up of grasses like cocksfoot or fescue, legumes like clover, vetch or alfalfa, and plants like dandelion or chamomile, all of which grow naturally in the mountains.
One single mowing, in the high mountains
The season starts late —from late June to mid-August—: at this altitude, springs are colder and the grass grows slowly. That's why all our hay is a first and only cut, short-stemmed, nutritious, with a high fiber and mineral content and maximum digestibility.
Irrigated meadows guarantee us a minimum harvest every year; rain-fed ones depend entirely on rainfall, temperature and whether it snowed in winter or not.
From meadow to hayloft
After mowing, the hay dries in the sun, being turned over three or four days before it's raked into rows and baled. It's then stored in the haylofts attached to the house, which preserves its green color and characteristic aroma. A natural, balanced and healthy feed for your horse or your rabbit.
Throughout the whole process we run checks with moisture and temperature measurements: while it dries, after baling and once it's stored in our hayloft. That's how we make sure the hay stays at its best at every stage.

Analysis done on a sample from the hayloft —5 kg of hay from the different meadows—, so values may vary depending on the meadow and the plants that make it up.
What sets a premium hay apart from a lesser one is its percentage of dry matter, which is the actual feed content. A premium hay should be around 82%; ours comes in at 92,6 %, well above the reference value.
Lignin, although it isn't digested, helps keep the gut moving: it prevents gastrointestinal stasis, guards against an excess of fermentable nutrients that could cause diarrhea or microbial imbalance, and promotes natural tooth wear.
Only our own hay
At Piriheno we don't sell our hay to third-party brands, nor do we authorize it being marketed under other names, whether for horses or rabbits. We only offer hay produced by us, from the grass of our own Pyrenees meadows.
We distribute directly to the end customer for horse hay, and to specialty pet food stores and veterinary clinics for rabbit hay.
